About Project: The project aims to investigate the Phenomena of Film Formation in Bio-Polymers Based Edible Films and Coatings for Food Packaging Applications. The global food packaging market is expected to grow to $306 billion by 2019 with major requirement coming from Asia-Pacific. Indian market is expected to grow at even higher rate of 8% for the next 5 years. Hence the demand for food packaging material is going to increase further. However, the current packaging material, the synthetic plastics from petroleum sources is causing a serious threat to the environment due to its non-degradability. Hence, there is a need to go for packaging material that are environmental friendly and Edible Films and Coatings are one very promising alternative for this. This project has the following specific objectives:
1. To develop fundamental understanding of the film formation and cracking process in aqueousdispersions of bio-polymers
2. To study the effect of various parameters such as Polymer Tg, Particle Size, Process conditions
(Humidity and Temp.) etc. on the process of film formation.
3. To study film formation in soft-hard blends of bio-polymers such as cellulose and proteins
4. To develop a theoretical model to explain the observed experimental results
